JAPANESE TRADE
SYDNEY, July 18. The Japanese Special Trade Commissioner in the South Seas, after visiting Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth, forecasts a direct steamship service between Japan and YVestralia, where the possibilities of reciprocal trade are distinctly good. He considers that the wool trade will increase amazingly. Japan is at present manufacturing large quantities of khaki for Russia, and when the present conflict ends there will be a great outlet for the same trade in China. He anticipates a big demand in Japan for frozen beef, zinc, copper, and lead. July 19. The Japanese Trade Commissioners will depart for New Zealand next week. In the meantime they are exhaustively studying the ojiening of Japanese trade, which will mean the exclusion of German. They state that they have no desire to compete with Australian manufactures, but to send only article::- which were previously imported from Germany and Austria. The manager of the Osaka Shosan Kaisha Line, one of the Commissioners, states that if circumstances warrant it, the company will inaugurate a regular cargo service. He is convinced that the Australian-Japanese trade will enormously develop.
