Juno 24.—Ruin set in on Sunday night last, and it rained almost continuously until Wednesday evening, when it cleared, and the- weather has since been fine. Ihe mountain tops got a coating of snow. Valedictory .-The Rev. JV. Uphill, who has just relinquished the charge of VValsatipu parish to take over the Lawrence charge, was entertained at yaredictory socials by the parishioners of the Queenstown and Arrowtowu Anglican Churches last week. As showing the popularity ox the rev. gentleman, the attendances at both places were very largo. At each place ho was presented with a purse of soverigns. Mr and Mrs Uphill and family left Queenstown on Monday morning last for Lawrence. They wero accorded.a hearty eend-off by a largo number of friends. Sad Drowning Accident.—A sad drowning fatality occurred at Frankton wharf about 5.30 this morning. The steamer Earnslaw was unloading cargo, and was being shifted from one end of the wharf to the other. One of the deck hands named James P. Banning was on the wharf attending to the ropes, when by some way he fell into the lake. The body did not rise, but was got out of the water in about 15 minutes; but life was extinct. Deceased leaves a widow and three young children. Ro had not been long in the employ of the Wakatipu steamer service. Queen&town Debating Society.—The opening debate for the season under the auspices of the Queenstown Debating and Social Club took place last week. The subject was " That the efficiency of New Zealand would increased by adopting the Daylight Saving Bill." The affirmative was supported by Mr A. Simson, seconded by the Rev. G. 11. GAhb, and- the negative by Mr Hoddinott, seconded by Mr M. J. Gavin. The result was a victory for the affirmative by 10 votes to 9. The subject for the next debate is " That America is justified in remaining neutral during tho present war." School Committee Election. —As the Gibbston householders failed to elect a school committee at tho statutory time, a second meeting was held on Friday evening, 16th inst., when the following committee was elected : —Messrs Thos. Kinross (chairman and secretary), F. Perriam (treasurer), I. C. Vidal, K. H. Graham, and Mrs James Reid. On Final Leave.—Privates P. Atley and Outhbert Matthews are at present spending their final leave in the district prior to leaving for the front.
