The other clay an Anzac officer was giving reminiscences in Christchurcli. Talking of many heroic acts, from privates to General Birdwood, he came back repeatedly to tho li three bravest men I have ever known." The talk was distinctly not for publication, though every line of it was worthy of that, but since then a News representative has asked the narrator to say something that might be published regarding his "three bravest men," particularly as one of them was a Christchurcli boy" who, by all accounts, fully deserved the V.C., and here is the result: These three brave men happened to be all non-combatants, and tho officer considers that they were each as worthy of tho Victoria Cross for supreme and continuous heroism as anyone who got it. Not the courage of dashing into action, but coolly, methodically, two of them medical men and one a storekeeper. They were superlative heroes among the heroes of Anzac. Ono was Captain Craig (N.Z.M.C.), of ~nd. who was one who first landed under Colonel House, Y.C., establishing a hospital there. But as the wounded were brought in the congestion became so great that Captain Craig was directed to open an auxiliary clearing station at tho foot of Artillery lane, and hero Captain Craig attended tho wounded. It was under fire, and the bullets were living and shrapnel was whizzing around. One of his assistants had been shot beside him, and yet Dr Crai" workecTwithout cessation from midday °til! early next morning. Later this gallant officer was under Colonel Plugge, and was wounded. His conduct, his fearlessness, and disregard of danger in the execution of his duty were splendid. Later lie returned to New Zealand after typhoid. "Did ho receive any distinction?" interrupted one. "No, and ho is not likely to; but he deserves it."

The next was one of our own Christchurch medicos—Captain Noil Guthrie, of the N.Z.M.0., attached to the C.M.R., one of the bravest of the brave. Three times was Captain Guthrie wounded, and yet held to his work—never faltering in his duty,—refusing to leave even when pressed to do so. Finally a bullet got him in the back <>f the neck, ami his comrades believed ho was dead. Even the medical officer who was. called up when ho fell let him lie there as ho had fallen, face downwards and still, remarking 1 that lie was done for, and lie must get on with tho

ii> gent cases which Captain Guthrie was attending to when finally shot down. Yet he presently sat up, and, after long suffering, has recovered.

Finally, there was Captain William Book, an ordnance officer. " Beachy Bill" was in charge of the store —a miserable little place. —and whenever he pi\ his nose out of the door bullets tried to hit it. The Turkish gun in Olive Grove was named after him, " Beachy Bill." The store was simply a shop under lire, and Bill looked out and wont on with his work just as if no bullets were about. He was most courteous and humorous, and no assistant at Whiteley's could have been more pleasing and courteous than this bravo storekeeper on Anzac Beach. General Birdwood never failed to call on Captain Beck or call out as he passed on his daily rounds, asking- if ho were there; and they all dreaded that some day there would be no reply from a gaunt figure still in death. But Captain Beck was only concerned for the safety of his customers. Ho hurried them away—never himself.

Captain Bock was born on the West Coast, and is a son of Mrs Beck, of Wellington.
