GOOD PRICE FOR A NORTHERN TERRITORY CLIP.
An interesting sale of scoured woo], which was effected by Messrs DuCroz Doxat at their sale in London on Juno 2. 1916 —viz, the whole of the scoured portion of the (TG) Avon Downs clip of 1915. Some 323 bales ox the P. F>. Themistocles sold tip to 3s 9d per lb. and made an all round average of 3s 6d per lb. Tins wool was grown on the "Avon Downs'' station, Barkly Tableland, Northern Territory, and was scoured by Messrs Widdon lire?, of Sydney. "Avon Downs" station Mas formed some 54- years ago by a well-known Australian pioneer pastoralist, Mr Tims. Guthrie, who spent 30 years developing - this hitherto comparatively unknown country to carry sheep. When Mr Guthrie pioneered the Northern Territory with sheep from his ''Rich Avon" station in
Victoria, his friends tried to convince him that "sheep would not grow wool so 'far north, but hair." From the very first the reverse lias been the case, for on move than one occasion, the "Avon Downs" menno wool has topped the London market. \\ e learn from Messrs Dalgety and Company that this highly improved far back station, which is now'the property of The Avon Downs Pastoral Company, in which Mr Thos. Guthrie and his sons are still largely interested, is the only sheep station in thehuge Northern Territory of Australia.
