OTAGO A. & P. SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago* A. and I'. Society was held on Thursday morning. Sir I''. Freeman (president) occupied the chair.

The Chairman referred feelingly to the recent death of Mr John Elliot, and moved —"That this meeting wishes to cxnrecs its deep regret at the death of Mr Elliot, who was for many years an active member of committee, and of late an honorary life member of the society, and that Mr Eiliot's valuable work in the interests of the society be recorded in the minutes; and also that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs Elliot and family, enclosing a copy of the resolution." —Tho motion was carried by members standing. Tho Hon. Secretary of the Nov; Zealand Fruitgrowers' Association wrote stating that during 1917 there wouk! be held in Dunedin a great national apple show, which should draw entries from Auckland to Bluff. The show would be held under the auspices of the New Zealand Federation, compiling the whole of the fruit-growing associations throughout New Zealand. The writer requested the sympathy and co-operation of the Otago A. and P. Society, Otago Expansion League, and the Dunedin Horticultural Society, and suggested that the _A. and P. Society appoint two representatives to act on the "Show Committee.—Messrs R. A. S. Cantrell and R. A. Ewing were appointed to represent the society on the committee.

Mr. A. A. Scott wrote returning his cheque for judge's expenses, and asking that the money be devoted to Our Soldiers' Fund.—Received; Mr Scott to be thanked for his donation.

Mr J. Births (Waikouaiti) also wrote returning his cheque for judge's expenses, and asked th.it it bo devoted to Our Soldiers' Fund.—Mr Birtles to bo thanked. Mr Arthur Wood (Crown Hotel, Balclutha) wrote offering a special prize, valued at £5 ss, to tho exhibitor gaming most points in the sheep classes at the Winter Show, the sheep to be bred by exhibitor.— Tho offer was received with thanks., and the letter was referred to the Sheep Committee.

Mr T. Lewis (chairman of a mectingof Ayrshire breeders held in Dunediri during the Winter show) wrote asking that a judge from the North Island be appointed to judge Ayrshire cattle at the next Summer Show.—Referred to the Cattle Committee to report. The Secretary of the New Zealand Conn oil of Agriculture wrote stating that the annual conference of A. and I.'. Associations would be held in Wellington on Tuesday, July 11. and ssked for remits from the society.—The president and Mr A. S. Orbell were appointed delegates to the conference.

The Secretary of the Manawatn A. and P. Association wrote in connection with the local rating on show grounds, and stated that efforts would be made at the forthcoming conference to obtain legislation to enable a remission of rates to be obtained. —lt was resolved to co-operate with tin 1 Manawatu Association, and support any efforts to obtain the desired redress.

The question of tho transit of stcck to and from the show came up for discussion, and it was resolved that strong representations bo made to tho Railway Department regarding the vexatious delays in the transit of live stock to the show. It was resolved that Messrs Richardson and Bossenec be asked to-judge the school children's essay competitions in connection with tho Winter Show. The Finance Committee reported on tho receipts and expenditure of- tho Winter Show, details of which -were explained by the hon. treasurer (Mr Angus).—The report was adopted, members expressing satisfaction with tho general results of the show. Accounts amounting to £1752 4s 6d were passed for payment.

The Chairman reported that the total sums received in the Winter Show for patriotic purposes amounted to £930 3s 2d, of which sum £412 12* 2d was obtained from refreshment room and Saturday's gate moncv.

The date of the next Horse Show was fixed for Thursday, September 23, and the dates of tho Summer Show Wednesday and Thursday, November 29 and 30.
