PORTABLE WIRELESS.
WELLINGTON, June 22. Tho importance of a portable wireless apparatus being maintained at each of the four centres of the dominion for emergency work Was urged on tho Postmaster-general this evening by Mr J. M. Dickson, who instanced the recent case of tho Aurora, when a private apparatus had had l<:. be secured in Duneuiri in order to go to the assistance of tho vessel. If this proposal were impossible at least one such apparatus ghould be available in each island.
In reply, Sir Joseph Ward said he had already authorised the provision of one spare sot, and ho was considering whether a second £et should no secured. It was not a very expensive matter, as tho machine.; cost only £i(X) or £2OO each. As a general principle, however, it was not the business of tho Government, except in extraordinary eases such as that of tho Aurora freely to. equip itinerant vessels sent on errands of mercy. Wireless equipment was now so cheap that tho owners of vessels should provide their own equipment to get into touch with tho Nev/- Zealand stations.
