CHESS.
TELEGKAPHIC CHESS MATCHES. The chess match by telegraph between Canterbury and Wellington, 12 a side, resulted in a draw, each side scoring four wins and four draws, this (says the Post) being curiously enough the same finish as in the fust match played in 1879. Of the 10 matches played, five have been won by Wellington, two by Canterbury, and three have ended in a tic. The matches comprise lIS gomes, of which Wellington won G2 and Canterbury 56. Fifty years elapsed on the 19th inst. since the first match by telegraph was played in New Zealand—a two game match, between Nelson and Christchurch. The telegraph line between the two centres had just been completed, and the idea of the match originated with the lato Mr Charles Janion, afterwards well known in Dune din and Wellington. It is proposed to mark the jubilee by a. similar match between Nelson and Canterbury clubs.
