TORPEDOED IN THE AFTERNOON. LONDON, May 9. A submarine attacked the Cymric at 4 p.m. The explosion of the torpedo killed five of the crew. The vessel kept afloat for 11 hours, when she sank. A hundred and seven took to the ship's boats and attempted to make a south of Ireland port, but a Dutch steamer picked them up after eight hours in the boats. The Cymric was carrying a general cargo. Queenstown reports that all the Cymric's passengers were saved. PARIS, May 9. A report from Brest states that the fourmasted ship Calgate has been sunk by asubmarine. Of her crew 12 have been picked up, but a boatload of 14 is missing. AN AUSTRIAN EXPLANATION. WASHINGTON, May 9. The State Department, having received Austria's explanation of the attack on the Russian barque Imperator by a submarine, will take no further action. There were two Americans aboard.
