PATRIOTIC APPLE SHOW

A FINE DISPLAY. WELLINGTON, May 9. Tho National Apple Show, which was opened at the Town Hall to-day, is the first exhibition of its kind held in New Zealand. Its success exceeds tho most sanguine anticipations. The display of all kinds of fruit is nothing short of marvellous, considering what little preparation was made. The arrangements for holding a show devoted almost entirely to amnios were started so recently that the Auckland province is almost out of it. So far as Nelson is concerned tho growers have had a little over a week to select their samples. Tho apples are fair samples taken from ordinary commercial lots, and in view of this fact the display is most surprising. May 10. Tho National Apple Show in the afternoon and evening attracted much attention and favourable comment. The judges - today made the following awards in connection with the collective displays from tho provincial districts: —Nelson 1, Hawke's Bay 2, Canterbury 3 (best decorated effect), Otago 4, Port Albert (Auckland) 5. Port Albert had really only a special exhibit, not intended for competitive purposes, as the season has closed in the Auckland district. DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. As a result of tho apple show just closed prizes were distributed as follows:

The accompanying table shows tho position of tho districts named in the "districts' display" at the show. The result of tho judging as shown in the tabic is not to Otago's advantage, but a correspondent writes that the whole show was "run" by the Nelson land agents. '3 o
