GALE ON EAST COAST

SEVERAL STEAMERS DAMAGED. AUCKLAND, May 14. Steamers arriving at Auckland to-day report very rough, weather on the coast and in the Tasman Sea. The Indralema, from Brisbane, averaged only five knots for the voyage. She shipped heavy seas when off Cape Maria van Diomen. Tho steering chains carried away, and tho vessel drifted for an hour until repairs were effected. The Wallsend, from New Plymouth, also had a tempestuous passage on Wednesday. A heavy eea struck the ship, smashing tho hand-steering gear aft, and flooded and ripped the lining from the engineers' quarters aft. The Warrimoo, from Napier, had to put out to sea when discharging at that port, and brought on 600 tons of Hawke's Bay cargo to Auckland.
