RACING NEW ZEALAND.

FORBURY PARK TROTTING MEETING. First Day—Thursday, May 11. The Forbury Park Trotting Club opened its winter meeting on Thursday in beautifully fine weather, and there was an excellent attendance. The track provided good going, but appeared to be on the hard side, as there was only a mild cushion on the surface. The card provided interesting sport, and some fairly close finishes tfere witnessed. Racing commenced with the First Amateur Handicap, in which the field ran in much closer order than is usually noticed in these events. Brightchild began smartly, and piloted the way for a circuit, but then Bergan assumed command, and over the final lap nothing seriously menaced his chance. Degree looked to hold a good chance of landing second money, but a mix half way up the straight resulted in his finishing outside the first six. Both Brightchild and Robert R. tired after going a mile. The bulk of the money in the Domain Handicap came for Woodchild and the American mare Bonilcne. Woodchild soon took charge of affairs, and after piloting the way, finally stalled off Livingstone, who finished on a break and was beaten by over a length. The above-named pair were well out from the others over the last circuit. Sunrise was going well for about a mile and a-half, but Bonilene failed to threaten danger. She, however, looks a likely sort of a filly. Nora M'Kinney was moving up with a lap to go, but did not make much impression on the placed lot at the business end. The Bronzewing began badly, and never got near those in front of him in the Beach Handicap. The others ran in close order until a lap from home, but the final circuit saw the field spreading. With about three furlongs to go Imperial Princess supplanted Irvwin in the lead, and won by three lengths from Sir Gavin, who gained second place as a result of Irvwin going to a break a few strides from home Irvwin was running a good race until half a mile from the post, but then commenced to tiro. The scratching pen went through the names of Reggie Iluon, Adonis, Minston, and The King's General for the Kitchener Handicap, leaving a field of seven to face the starter. Tamarisk took up the running before completing the first furlong, in which Matchlight put in a break. Before going a mile Muricata had ranged alongside the leader's wheel, and remaining there until heads were straightened for home, came on to win by three lengths from Franzalena, who beat the tiring Tamarisk by two lengths. Moneymaker, who never looked particularly dangerous, finished four lengths off fourth. Annie K., who put in a bad break going down the back stretch for the last time, was always handy to the leaders up till that stage, but then dropped right out of it. Matchlight did not appear at home on the track, and put in skips which effectually settled his chance. The scratch horse, Denver Huon, could not get near the front division, and did not appear to bo acting too level. Muricata was patiently handled, and won comfortably at the finish. The sectional parts of the race were run in Imin 13 <T-ssco. 2min 21 2-ssec, 3min 54 3-sscc, and 4min 39 1-530 C. Erin's Queen was a strong order for the Innovation Handicap, but she put herself quickly out of court by failing to leavo the mark. Turning into the straight S*. Maunga fell, and brought down Promise and Myola. Rearguard took charge early in the race, and. stalling off Miss Alexa, won by a length and a-half. The first two drew well out from the others over the last half mile. The stewards _ held an inquiry into the cause of the mishap, and arrived at the conclusion that it was purelv an accident. Most of the field in the St. Clair Handisap put in breaks. A good favourite in

Gemma failed to get going, and lost her handicap. She then made a rapid move forward, but put in a bad break. Commander Bell was in charge four furlongs from home, hut broke, and gave way to Rummy, who was always disputing the leadership. From that on Rummy k( pt the lead, and won from Muungatui, Commander Bell finishing third. Bellflower was running close up third two and a-half furlongs from home, but extinguished an apparently good chance by putting in two breaks. She again broke coming up the running, and finished fourth, just in front of Miss Salisbury. Gemma showed a lot of p ;iee > n going away from the scratch lot during part of the race, and had evidently given fair reason for her favouritism. The field got badly away in the Jeffs Memorial Handicap. Reggie Huon did not come on with the others on the same mark, and failed to leave. Aberfeldy and Hectorata also failed to move, and The King's General hung on the mark. Bacchus and Wilkio established a good lead, and turning for home Wilkic had Bacchus beaten, whilst Minston was coming with a good run. Wilkio finally stalled off Minston. and won by a short length. Prince Poole was a bad fourth. The start spoilt what might have been a good race, as only the placed three got well away. It looked a foregone conclusion that Reggie Huon was unlikely to leave the mark, as he was dancing instead of getting into his hobbles. Still, it is questionable whether the starter should have sent away the limit horses whilst one of their number was anything but in line with them. It was difficult to distinguish the horses in the final event as they mustered at the post. Quadroon, Nore. and King Daphne led past the stand. Nore was in charge f our furlontrs from home, but rounding the far turn Jolly Girl ran to the leader, and won from Law Chimes, who put in good work over the last part of the journey. Quadroon finished close up third, then came Cappriccio. Nore, and Takio. There was not much pleasure in viewing a race run in semi-darkness, and if the club adheres to such a lengthy card, the fields, particularly the last o\ie, should bo marshalled and ready to start as promptly as possible on time. The sum of £16,533 10s was put through the totalisator, as against £13.347 for the corresponding day last year, when the weather was very wet. The war tax amounted to £372 ls'6d. The following are the results: — FIRST AMATEUR HANDICAP - (Sladdle), Of lOOsovs; second, 15sovs, and third ssovs. One mile and a-half. I—Mr J. P. At the end of a lap Woodchild was a dozen lengths clear of Sunrise, with Livingstone threo lengths away, and Nora M'Kinncy moving up. Going to the far turn Livingstone moved into second place, but broke, and was again headed by Sunrise. Passing the stand for the last lap_ Woodchild was leading Livingstone by six lengths, then coming Nora M'Kinncy and Sunrise, eight lengths further back. Tamarisk was. still showing the way as they ran past the stand for the second time, with Muricata closeup second, followed by Annie K., with Moneymaker -improving his position. Going down the back the positions of the leaders were unchanged. Entering on the next circuit, Tamarisk was. just leaeling Muricata. with Annie K. two lengths awav and Moneymaker and Franzalena three lengths away; Matchlight and Denver Huon apparently having no chance. Annie K. broke in the back run, and dropped rieht out, and, running to the far end, Franzalena commenced to move up a bit. Tamarisk remained in charge as the field went for the last lap, Muricata being on his wheel. The leader, however, tired in the run home, and Muricata won by three lengths from Franzalena, who beat Tamarisk by two lengths. First Chime led past the stand, but Rearguard had taken charge before a circuit had been covered. Turning out of the straight for the second lap Rearguard was leading Robert R., Miss Alexa, and Landmark, in close order, then coming Belgian. Landmark broke going down the back, and in the run home Rearguard stalled off Miss Alexa and beat her by a length and a-half, with Belgian seven lengths away, third. Rummy held his' place running for the last lap, Maungatui, Parkficld, Commander Bell, and Allen Doone close un in that order. Comma rider Bell had headed the field four furlongs from home, but broke, and Bellfiower, who had srot within striking distance of the leaders two and a-half furlongs from home, also spoilt his chance by putting in two bad breaks. Rummy kept clear, and won bv nearly three lengths from Maungatui with Commander Bell four lengths awav third. Bellfiower, who put in a further break, was fourth, and Miss Salisbury fifth. Quadroon was two lengths away, third, then coming Cappricico, Nore, and Takio. Time, 2min 19 2-ssec.

Second Day—Saturday, May 13. The Foibiuy Park Trotting Club's winter meeting was concluded on Saturday in lino but coldish weather, a north-easterly wind imparting a touch 'jf winter to the atmosphere, lbc tiack was in firm order, but the wind did not assist towards the putting up of fast times. During the day the running of gome of the winners was the cause of inquiry, but the stewards did not find sufficient reason to niter the figures hoisted by the' judge. At the outset the attendance was not particularly large, but after the first couple of races the enclosures filled up so well as to represent one of the best musters ever seen on the course. The card provided some interesting racing, and the majority of the events were climaxed by fairly close finishes, and on one occasion the judge had to register a dead-heat. Most of the fields mixed their gaits in the Second Amateur Handicap, in which Degree had the result apparently in safe keeping when well out in front two furlongs from home. A bad break, however, put him right out of it, and loft Jimmy Campbell to win by four lengths from Thora, who gained second money as a result of Almont junior mixing a few strides from the post. Outside the placed Jot Mayfield was showing pace, but nullified it by putting in breaks after getting fairly close to the leaders. Silver King was also well up, but failed to gain a place. ■ Mabel Wood was elected a good favourite for the Pacific Handicap, in which Robert R. began smartly and opened up a gap of a dozen lengths in the first furlong. Robert R. was piloting the way until about four furlongs from home, when he gave way to Bergan, with Mabel Wood and Moorland running close up. Turning for home Bergan and Moorland drew out from the others, and after a good race home, the judge was unable to separate them. Robert R. finished third, about a dozen lengths off, with Mabel Wood and Belgian close up. The favourite, who is a sister to Admiral Wood, whilst always handy over the first mile, failed to show sufficient brilliancy to get amongst the money. Captain Stanley appeared to have a good chance of landing the Dunedin Handicap, but he commenced to mix when in charge four furlongs from home, and lost place to Blackford, who then kept clear, and won by over six lengths from Silver Shoe, who beat Captain Stanley by a neck in a good finish for second place. Green Ribbon finished close up, fourth. Seaward Spot faded right out after being prominent in the first part, Bellfiower lost her chance through mixing, and Imperial Princess and Irvwin could not get to.the leaders. After the race protests were lodged against the winner on the ground of inconsistent running, and another against the second for interference. After consideration, both were dismissed by the stewards. Minston was sent out a strong favourite for the Winter Oats, carrying more than twice the support accorded the second favourite, Franzalena. Matchlight, actingmore kindly than on the first day, kept charge from the move-off and won by a length. Franzalena was easing up wdien beaten, and The King's General commenced to fade out over a circuit from homo. Denver Huon was called off for anticipating his bell. The time was slower than the class, but a fair breeze was blowing, and did not assist the watch. M. Edwards was fined £1 for beating his bell, and E. M'Cann, on being questioned as to why he did not persevere with The King's General, stated that his horse was unreliable and also stopped on his own accord. M'Cann's explanation was accepted. Nora M'Kinney began well in the Peninsula Handicap, and found nothing capable of menacing her chance except Woodchild, whom she beat handily enough at the finish. A well-backed chance in El Carbine ran an indifferent race, and another American bred one in Madame Shaw also failedto get in the money. The stewards held an inquiry into Nora M'Kinney's running, and whilst expressing the opinion that it was very suspicious did not disturb the judge's placings. Molly M'Kinney unshipped her rider in a mix-up at the start of the Handicap. First Chimes " was always disputing leaeiership, but in the run home Inwood beat him by a head on the post. Immediate and Silversmith were prominent in the first half, but then faded out. Lady Margaret and Beubell moved up in the last three furlongs, but could not sustain their efforts over the run from the homo turn. A strong favourite in Tamarisk got well away at tlio start of the Park Handicap, but yielded pilotage to Bacchus, who opened up a six-length gap in the first mile. Tamarisk had him measured off two furlongs and a-half from homo, and finally won comfortably by four lengths from Stanley's Child, who was putting in good work over the last circuit. Law Chimes dropped out after being well up in the first part. None of the others got into the danger zone. Arbiter began smartly in the final event, and led to the home turn, where 0.1. C. went past and won nicely. Arbiter stopped, and in the run home both Quadroon and Hectorata beat him for a place. Nore _was well up with the leaders, but broke going down the back, and Leading Light also dropped away after being hanely as they came down the straight for the first time. A protest was entered by the owner of Quadroon against the winner on the ground of inconsistent running, but after hearing evidence the protest was dismissed. The Judicial Committee had W. Byrnes, the owner of Franzalena, before them on a charge of calling out "over" in an audible voice when Denver Huon was leaving the mark in the Winter Oats Handicap. Symes explained that he was excited and called out unwittingly and with, no intention of in-

fluencing the starter. The committee decided that in future permits will not be granted owners to go down to the starting post, except under very particular circumstances. Air Hodges, the president ot the club, added that the starter was not influenced in any way by Synics calling our, and that Denver Huon got away two seconds before his time. The sum of £23.414 10s was put through the totaiisator during the day, as against £21.604 for the second day last year. The war tax amounted to £432 ss. The total for the meeting was £37,948, as against £34,941 for tiie corresponding two clays last year. The leader then put in a skip, and Jimmy Campbell again took charge, and led into the last lap from Degree and Silver King, Almont Jun. lying fourth. Degree got to the front four furlongs from home, and going down the back a good deal of mixing took place. Degree looked to have the race won two furlongs from home, when well out in front, but put in a bad break and dropped right out. This left Jimmy Campbell in charge, and he finally won by four lengths from Thora, who gained second money through Almont Jun. mixing a few strides from the post.
