FIGHTING IN EAST AFRICA.
HIGHLY SATISFACTORY. LONDON, April 8.
General Smuts reports : The mounted force, under General Van der Venter, on the 4th inst., surprised and sur= rounded a German force with machine guns in a mountain stronghold in the Arusha district. The Germans sur= rendered on the 6th.
Official: General Smuts's later re* ports indicate that the success at Arusha is more extensive than at first appeared. The German force which capitulated was a considerable one. Seventeen European and 404 native prisoners have already surrendered, and others are coming in. There were also many casualties. Machine guns and much ammunition were captured.

LONDON, April 8.
Arrangements are being made for a great celebration in London of " Anzac Day" (April 25). A committee comprising the High Commissioners and Agents-general proposes to hold a memorial service, and also a concert and entertainment for the Australasian soldiers.
