AUCKLAND TOPICS.

Bv Taittoa

The Easter meeting at Ellerslie was advanced another stage on Monday, when che weights nopoaiyd for the minor events to be decided on the first day. Aucklanders will have racing in plenty at Easter time, and. after doing the Auckland Plaster meeting on the Saturday and Monday, will be called upon to assist at thg Avondale J.C. autumn fixture the following Wednesday and Saturday. The four day t within one week should be welcomed bj visiting owners, who will have an increases opportunity of winning a race without much extra expense. The Taumarunui Club brought off the annual meeting last Saturday, and a tremendous success it was. Tt, was the first tote, meeting held by the club, and nearly £19.000 was put through the totaljsator. _ The North Shore sportsmen, the Alison family, had n regular field day. winning three races with as many horses. "The Aus-tralian-bred filly Housewife won the Cup in easy style. She was at once taken to the front, and. striding along freely, never onco looked like being caught. Her performance pained her many admirers for the Easter Handicap, but the class at Taumamnui and that she will be up against at Ellerslie are quite different. The_ Messrs Alison also scored with Thoolomi, also an Australian purchase, but ho only won by a head in a very poor field. The consistent Coleraine won one sprint and ran a dead-heat with Try Fluke in another, the only other open race going to Lightning, who, after running badly earlier in the day, came out later and won in good style. Try Fluke did the same. The Grand National Steeplechase winner Ngatoa was produced in the hurdle race, but his opponents were as had a lot as could be got together. As it was he was very lucky to win, as Eminent held a big lead when ho crashed into a fence and broke down. This enabled Ngatoa to win very easily. Sir Rosa, one of F. Stennings's team, was made a very warm order in the Maiden, but his chance was soon settled, as he got chopped out at the start, and, of course, in a field of 19 never had a ehnnce of getting through afterwards. The forward running of Spr.lfish in the open sprints would be pleasing to those who have supported him in Easter doubles. The racing he had should sharpen him up for his Ellerslie engagements. However, it must not be forgotten that the same stable shelters a good one in Tararu Jack, and if I were asked to name the better of the pair I would go for Tararu Jack. No notice can bo talton of Ring Lupin'a

form at Hamilton last week. He will do better at tho Manawatu meeting. At present Colonel Soult and Tact are the most inquired for of the local horses in the Easter, but, were it known for certain that Eligible was to come up, he would soon be favourite. When the weights appear matters on the training track should liven up considerably, but at present only useful exercise is being allotted.

NEW ZEALAND TROTTING ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association was held on Wednesday, sth inst.; present—Messrs P. Selig (president), W. J. Hopkins, W. H. Denton W. G. Gorrard, H. J. Palmer, H. W. Kitchingham, and 11. F. Nicoll. The South Wairarapa Trotting Club wrote stating that it had no objection to giving its profits to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, but it did not approve of setting them aside for the benefit of any particular class. Subject to that reservation, it had no objection to the funds being administered by trustees appointed by the racing and trotting authorities. A letter from the New South Wales Trotting Club, in reference to the West Australian Trotting Association's suggestion that regulations should be adopted to make branding compulsory, was referred to the Special Committee appointed to report on the subject. The case of the horse George Berlin, who at the last meeting of the association had been disqualified for life on the ground that he was identical with the horse Kalgoorlie, was further considered. —Mr A. E. Hall, of Ravensboume, who was stated to be the breeder of George Berlin, and from whom Alexander Dawes said that ho had purchased that horse, was in attendance. In the course of his evidence, Mr Hall said that he bred George Berlin, the horse that raced at Waikouaiti. He could not say whether those men who examined the horse at Grant's stables, which they said was Kalgoorlie, saw the horse he had bred. He was not at the stables at the time. Hia son bought the dam of George Berlin in foal, but he could not say from whom he bought her. His son was now in America, but he (witness) understood from him that the mare was in foal to George M. Patchen. Mr Dawes had made inquiries from the owner of George M. Patchen to verify the breeding, but nad been informed that he had no records so far back. Witness had never raced a horse in his life, but when he heard from Mr Dawea that there was soma

trouble about George Berlin he agreed to take the horse back at the samo price (£ls) as Mr Dawes had given for him. About the end of February he had sold the horse at a better price to a young fellow named George Robertson, who said he was going away into tho country. Witness did not know where Robertson was now, but ho thought ho -was in Central Otago. Witness had been told by Mr Ritchie not to part ■with the horse, but he had not felt interested in the matter, and so had sold him. Robertson, who gave him £2O for the horse, knew that he had been racing. He had several inquiries for the horse as soon as it was known that he had taken him back. In reply to questions, the witness said he had no concern with either Mr Dawes or tho board, and he considered that ho was entitled to please himself in regard to selling the horse. The horse had been sold before Mr Ritchie had told him not to part with him, but he had not given Mr Ritchie information to that effect. The witness also put in several affidavits dealing •with the identity of the horse. Further consideration of the case was adjourned. Correspondence was received from the Bengerburn Jockey Club in reference to the Ettrick Trot at the club's recent meeting. A horse called The Sprinter finished first, but the judge declined .him a place on the ground that he had walked past the post.—lt was pointed out that the judge's duty was confined to placing tho horses in the order in -which they passed the post, and it was decided to instruct the club that the stakes should be awarded to The Sprinter. The action of the stewards of the Wanganui Trotting Club in disqualifying Rio Grande for galloping in the Ballance Handicap, and placing Paddy Lind in his stead, was endorsed. Mr D. M. Cochrane, solicitor, wrote asking the association to consider the question of removing the disqualification imposed on Thomas Butler in connection with the horse Concorah.—lt was decided to communicate with the For bury Park Trotting Club, by whom the disqualification had been imposed. On the recommendation of the Foreign Horse Committee it was decided to issue certificates for the horses Lobster and Vera Mauritius.
