Tho Hibbert Journal for January has eovcral articles dealing directly with some aspects of the wax, and a few others concerned indirectly with the same groat topic. What is going to happen as resultant of this devastating conflict is what most of the writers are concerned about. While each ha; done his or her beet tc reason out one o. another of a variety of adjustments such at would bo of use to tho world generally, it must bo admitted that optimism does no: readily spring forth as a perusal of thee: essays'. To say tho least, there is such a welter of conflicting opinion voiced in then; that a great proportion must of necessity be beside the mark. Such caees as are stated by theologically-minded special pleaders appear to be tho most pathetically futile oi all. Here wo have one lady, Miss M. B. Robinson, organising secretary of tht Sociological Society, writing; a long papu ("The Definite Failure of Christianity, anr How it might be Retrieved") to prove that " Christianity has definitely failed, . . . afte, nineteen centuries of trial, . . . to redeem human life from the worst of its trials." The essay is an excellent one. It is very much to be doubted, however, if the attractive scheme of retrieval she so well sets forth (reformed preaching, international universities, etc) could bo brought into being, and kept agoing when this frightful war is ended. Perhaps tho best article in tho issue is that "On Some Moral Aspects and Issues of tho Present War," by Count Goblet D'Alviella, while that entitled "The Human Mind versus the German Mind," by Prof. Ladd, of Gale, on similar lines, is a very fine contribution. Also Prof. W. Adams Brown writes under the title, "Is Christianity Practicable?" the "Fight for Right Movement," is championed by Sir Frederick Pollock, Bart 2 and then are a number of papers, including one on "Religion in Russia To-day," all well worth attentive perusal. Di«C"s.»ions, reviews and surveys of current philosophy, theology, and social service, as usual, find liberal space in the Hibbert. (Williams and Norgato, 2s 6d net). Tho Triad for February is to hand. There are some illustrations, including a reproduction of the picture of the Queen of Sheba visiting King Solomon.
