PENINSULA A. AND P. SOCIETY

ANNUAL SHOW. The thirty-eighth annual show of stock and produce by the Otago Peninsula Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held at Portob'elio on Saturday. The weather was fine, and the attendance quite up ,to expectations. The numerous office-bearers did their utmost to make the show pass off without let or hindrance, and efforts in this direction were attended with the success they deserved. The secretary (Mr S Hinkley) gave what facility lay in his power to assist the press representatives. A contingent from the Kaikorai Band was on the ground, and played at intervals throughout the afternoon. . The show may be safely considered to' have, been a success both from a financial and exhibition points of view. There w*as a decided increase in the number of the entries, particularly in horses. It is estimated that in the aggregate there were 120 more entries, and the quality of the stock was well maintained in practically every department. Cattle in a dairying district must naturally be a feature of a show, and this proved to be the case at Portobello. "Whether it was in Ayrshires, Alderneys, Jerseys, or 'any other breed the judges’ remarks were invariably commendatory. Ayrshires, which formed a large section in the cattle, were regarded as generally good, and Messrs Weir Bros, proved the most successful exhibitors. In Alderncys or Jerseys the aged bull was considered to be a splendid animal and qualified to compete at any show. Aged cows were also looked upon as a good lot, especially the first prize winner. The first prize animal in dry cows proved an easy winner. The heifers were held to be a good lot. Mr F. E. Hellyer was the most successful exhibitor in this section. Shorthorns were favourably commented upon, the first prize two-year-old bull and the first prize yearling heifer being regarded as belonging to a superior order. Sheep formed a very small section. While some excellent draught horses wore brought into the ring, the competition was not keen. In mares and fillies, however, there were big rings, and the judge had plenty of work before him in arriving at a conclusion. Spring-cart horses w’ere even more numerous, and some very fine animals were shown. The championship for entire horse was secured by Mr W. Cowan, and for mare Mr G. R. Kane. Other sections in the show were not large, though they were very comprehensive, containing as they did dairy produce, bread, cured meats, roots and vegetables, poultry, dogs, shoeing, and jumping competitions. The last-named created great interest and not a little excitement. Following is the prize list:— CATTLE. Ayrshire. Judge: Mr A. Gillies (Hampden). Bull, one year old. Three entries —J. Weir 1, G.
