A little business has been clone this week in wheat, sales being reported of velvet at 4s 3cl and Marshall’s white at 4s 2d net. delivered at Oamaru. A good amount of wheat is offering hero from South Canterbury at from 4e 6d down to 4s 2d, on trucks, according to variety and sample, but failed to find buyers. The only transaction reported in oats has been a small lino of B grade Gartens, which were taken at country stations at 3s 4d not. Potatoes are becoming rather scarce, and have further advanced, £8 net having been paid at a country station. Growers are now asking £9. Merchants are disinclined to handle at this late period of the season, and consequently there are few buyers. SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (From Odb Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, October 30. The oat market is still dull, the only buying being for the filling of orders in hand. Merchants are not disposed to buy at present, and are holding firmly to what they have, with the result that prices for export are keeping up, and farmers’ best offers are 2a fid to 2s 8d on trucks, but not much business is being done at these figures. Prime chaff is worth £5 on trucks, but there is very little of this quality offering, and inferior chaff is not in demand. Owing to inquiries from Sydney, there is a good demand for potatoes, for which £6 to £6 10s on trucks is readily given, but, unfortunately, they cannot be got away owing to insufficient shipping accommodation. The demand for ryegrass continues, and, as very little w T as harvested in Canterbury last season, prices are likely to keep firm for a long time. The only seed available in Southland is the local crop and importations from England. There is very little doing in hemp, the price of which is the same as last week. Flour is now worth £l3 wholesale. There is very little wheat available, either milling or fowl. The best offer from the north is 4s 3d f.0.b., s.i., but there are few sellers. GRAIN AND PRODUCE SALE. Messrs Dalgety and Co. report as follows :—Oats: The market still remains dull and lifeless. Shippers are not operating at all freely, with the result that sales are confined to local requirements, which are not large. Prime milling, 3s 2d to 3s 3d; good to best feed, 3s to 3s Id per bushel (sacks extra). Wheat: There has been a little more inquiry of late for lines suitable for mixing, and sales have been made on the basis of quotations. There has been a good inquiry ior first class fowl wheat, and stocks of this quality in store are now lighter. Fail- quantities of smutted and out of conditioned grain are held in store, but is not readily quitted. Milling wheats, 4s 3d to 4s 6d; best whole fowl wheat, 4s to 4s 2d per bushel (sacks extra). Potatoes: Consignments coming to hand of late have not been very heavy, and in many cases are showing the advanced state of the season. The demand is confined to choice, freshly-picked lines in firm condition, for which there is a fair inquiry at quotations. Out of condition and poor quality lines are neglected, and saleable only at lower rates. Choice freshly-picked lots, £8 to £8 10s; others, £5 to £7 per ton (sacks in). Chaff: The demand being confined to local consumption, the quantity coming forward of late has been in excess of requirements, with the result that sales can only be effected at a reduction in late rates. Choice black oat, £6 to £6 Ss; best white oaten sheaf, £5 10s to £6; medium to good, £5 to £5 7s fid; damaged and inferior, £3 to £4 per ton (sacks extra). MELBOURNE HIDE SALES. MELBOURNE, October 23. At the hide sales to-day there were small supplies. Heavies and mediums were very firm, but sloppies were easy. OTAGO FARMERS’ HORSE BAZAAR. The Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association of New Zealand (Ltd.j report: Our weekly horse sale was held in our bazaar on Saturday, when we had a very small entry of 3D horses. The majority of these were aged draughts and light horses, nothing of any quality being forward. There was the usual attendance of town men, and a few farmers present, but the horses being mostly unsuitable sorts, did not command much attention, and very little business was done. Prices are as follow: Good young draught mares, £25 to £3O; superior young draught geldings, fit for shaft or lorry work, £3O to £36; ordinary draught mares and geldings, £3O to £25; aged draughts, to '£ls; good upstanding vannors, at from £lB to £25; ordinary spring-carters, at from £ls to £3O; upstanding buggy mares and geldings, £ll to £2O; hacks and ponies, £5 to £l2. PROPERTY SALE. There was a large gathering of Peninsula settlers at Messrs Park, Reynolds’ rooms on Saturday, when the late Mr William Lake’s farm of 37 acres 2 roods and 20 poles at Pukehiki was submitted to auction. Bidding started at £ls per acre, and rapidly reached £2l, thence by 5s rises to £22 15s, at which figure! Mr J. Craig Aitkon was declared the purchaser.
