THE SUBMARINES.
LONDON, October 20. In the House of Commons, the Undersecretary for the Admiralty (Dr Macnamara) stated that 183 British merchantmen and 175 fishing boats have so far been destroyed by submarines. COPENHAGEN, October 20. British submarines in the Baltic sank the German steamers Johanswulf, Hernoesand, and Dellfin, whilst it is rumoured that four others have been sunk. Danish captains say that British submarines pop up everywhere and disappear again with an alertness that proves their commanders to have an intimate knowledge of these difficult waters. They have seen several near Nanfield (? the minefields). LONDON, October 20. The British submarines in the Baltic have sunk 20 steamers during the week, including eight yesterday. Many steamers are taking refuge in harbours. AMSTERDAM, October 20. A Berlin report claims that German sub-
marines in September sank 29 steamers of a total tonnage of 103,315, seven fishing vessels, and two transports, while mines destroyed six steamers.
