PARIS, October 18,
A communique states: We repulsed three fresh attacks at Bois en Hache, north-eastward of Souchez. German attempts to advance north of Yerdun were repulsed.’ NAVAL AND AERIAL RAIDS. AMSTERDAM, October 18. The Telegraaf states that the British fleet bombarded Zeebrugge for four hours, and airmen participated in the attack. AMSTERDAM, October 18. Allied aviators flew over Bercham, near Brussels, and bombed the military buildings. Despite a heavy fire, they escaped southward. ADVANTAGES OF NEW STRATEGY. LONDON, October 18. The Exchange Telegraph Company’s correspondent at Petrograd says there is tremendous satisfaction in all quarters over the vigour and initiative since the Czar and General Alexieff have taken over the command. The successes gained are reacting favourably on the spirits of the army and of civilians. Returned wounded state that the troops are more confident and cheerful than they have been since the Austro-Germans’ spring offensive began. The Russian strategy will henceforth be that the enemy shall not get more ground than they are able to take. This policy presents certain dangers, but the staff considers the risks less harmful than the losses of men and material which resulted from the continued retreat. Since the Czar initiated this new strategy Russia has lost only one-third the number of prisoners that she has lost in a similar period during the preceding months, while she has taken prisoner fivefold more of the enemy and has regained lost territory in three theatres of the war.
