LADY FRENCH'S APPEAL

Some of you will remember that at the beginning of the war Lady French issued an appeal for clothing for the families of soldiers and sailors, many families, especi ally those with young children. being iv great distress owing to the sudden can upon the bread-winners. The Society for the Health of Women and Children took up the matter here, and a large consignment of bah'- clothing was sent Home as soon as possible. The work has still been going on. however, and last week I was privileged to see the second consignment being got ready. The society is very grateful to the many kind friends, especially to the large number in the country, who have made and sent in gifts of clothing. The society supplies patterns if requested. but otherwise everything is contributed by the donors, and the response has been splendid from all over Otago. (Some of the wo’k is most beautifullv done, especially the little knitted and crocheted garments. They will be fortunate babies indeed who get some of the bundles, for the clothing is all made mi into separate -unreels, each a complete outfit for one child. Some are “Karitane” bimd’es, containing the regulation set of clothes approved of by the society, and into each of these a copy of the Public Health Department's pamphlet, “Babv’s First Month,” is put. The other bundles are also most serviceable and all contain two or three of each, necessary garment, frocks, nightdresses, petticoats, vests, and pilches, besides a warm shawl and a bonnet or can and a. pair of bootees. One can imagine bow welcome these bundles will be in the depth of an English winter. The society- bones that all those to whom this sort of work appeals will not cease from their labours, as they are always ready to receive more garments and forward them as opportunity offers.
