WELLINGTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

October 23. Loyal Arch did not accept tor the first day at the Wellington meeting, but was brought down to contest the Champion Plate run on the second day. Sfie is the only Auckland compel, tor engaged at tne meeting. Her owner-trainer, Denis Moragiian, trained lilys.au, the hrst winner of tfie race. Stewart Waddell, the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s trainer, brought a team of 15 horses to the meeting. Some of them return home, bat the majority go on to Riccarton. Three of them wdl be sent to Auckland, ’ including Hyttus (the Hastings Stakes winner). Hyttus is a pretty good colt, who made his two stable mates engaged in the Wellesley Stakes look like a pair of moderates this morning. Your'correspondent thinks it will be a good year for two-ycar-olds. Several of the North Island youngsters are going south to meet Disdainful. During the past few weeks Pavlova has done a good lot of racing and track work. She has, unfortunately, failed to stand up to it, and although at Trenthara with other members of the Porirua team, will not race there. Coldstream has been galloping well over long journeys, and will be tfie stable representative in the New Zealand Cup. Balboa ran a good half-mile at Trontham on Wednesday morning, but the following morning he did not pull up too well. He did not gallop this morning, and was walking lame. F. Davis had his team in good fettle, and looked like having another successful season. This mishap to Balboa comes at a bad time. Plymettius will represent the Karamu stable in the Selling Plate to-day, and may be successful. Several useful horses from Karamu have been bought out of selling races here. They include The Stake, Idealist, Daytime, and Altcar. Mr H. G. Taylor returned from Sydney this week with his new purchase, the gelding Sir Tarka. It is seldom that Riccarton stables ax© so poorly represented at Trentham. Only six horses came up from the south. Bee did not make the trip. T. Quinlivan brought seven horses to Trentham, and they are being joined by Tatterley, Sweet Corn, and Sasinoff (Martian —Ukraine). Some of the team are engaged at the North Canterbury meeting. Bonny Helen is affected in the wind, but it does not appear to stop her from galloping. Expect is also what is termed a roarer. J. Buchanan is down from Auckland to ride the members of the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s team, also Loyal Arch, in the Champion Plate. This promises to be a splendid race. It is stated that after competing at Trentham Chortle will go on to Auckland for the City Handicap, and then go south for the Stead Gold Cup. He is in great bucjde at present. Multiply looks well, but does not appear too reliable. Still, a visiting trainer, who generally knows what ho is talking about, has selected him for the New Zealand Cup. It is reported that Nones is to be reserved for weight-for-age races, and will be ridden by B. Deeley when his services are not required for Chortle. The Martian filly is .said to be an unlikely starter in the Stewards, in which Deeley will be on Croesus. October 23. The Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting opened to-day in fine weather. There was a largo attendance, including about 4000 soldiers in camp. Naupata was withdrawn from the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplochace, the Porirua stable relying on Agatha Green. The latter was a good favourite. Nita, lost her rider at the first fence, and interfered with the favourite, who lost 50 yards. Chattis led for a mile, where Agatha Green took charge. Otupai made a good race of it from the last fence, but tno favourite won with a bit to spare. The opposition was very poor. Pcarlform was the only withdrawal from the Rimutaka. Handicap, 19 starting. Seaclown, the Wanganui double winner, was sent out a hot favourite. Ho did not getout well, and after improving his position in the straight, managed to got third to Sed-el-Bahr (Varco —Strowans), who ran second to Soadown at Wanganui, but failed when heavily backed for a maiden hack race at Master ton. Soadown carried about a third of the money on the machine, and both winner and runner-up paid good prices. Thoughtful ran second to Plunder nt Masterton, and has boon a consistent but ur.hiekv place-getter. The 'well-bred Gold Painting (Bnniform —Ormulu) showed out well for about six furlongs. The withdrawals of Mars in ah and Thailand from the Spring Selling Plate reduced the .runners to five. The Karamu renivBGiisativc, Hvmettiur, (winner of the Wei-

leslcy Stakes two years ago) was sent out favourite. Karamu horses have a pretty good record in selling races at Trcntham. ILo Stake, Idealist, Altcar, and Daytime were some of them. Hymettius was purchased by C. Pritchard, the local trainer, for a client, for 150 guineas. Pavlova, Nones, Bee, and Slogan wero pulled out of the Wellington Handicap, 16 starting. At the start Montana played up and was sent to the outside. Battle Evo tried to win from end to end, but was headed in Ihe last 100 yards by Montana, who was never further away than fourth. Goldstream ran round the outside of tho field, and with a longer journey would have won. Marco Bello and Square Deal did the best of tho others. The trainer of Montan* was only afraid of Nones, who was with, drawn. Montana has done well this season, and as ho would have ijot in tho New Zealand Cup with the minimum weight, his trainer wishes he had put him in that event. Battle Eve ran a surprisingly good race. All started for the Shorts Handicap except Bee. The Australian colt Three was sent out a hot favourite. Ho led- to within a few strides of the post, where Hygmas got un and won by a nose. The winner boat Three on tho only occasion they met last season at Trcntham, and was meeting Three on a stone better terms. Followers of the Karamu stable got a good dividend. The' two local horses. Ohakwana and Taringamutu, both ran well, finishing imme-' diately behind the placed horses. It was such a close finish that nobody but the judge could tell what won. Many thought Tete-a-tete was the winner. All started for the Wanin' Handicap except Montana, and Slogan. Tho fMrl included the New /"aland Cun candidates Indigo and Blackall. Black Bunin, with TTvgeG. made the running, the latter being first beaten. Black Lunin led irho the straight, but Indigo had his measure at the d'stan-ae. and won comfort, aMy hv two lengths; Blackall dose un. ih'rd. Tnd-go’s performance was the most mmressive of any of the Cun candidate? that raced today. In Dooley’s hands he won very easily, and pat un good time considering the weight carried. Winterbourne. Maorilander. IH-meneus, and Menelaus wore scratched for the Wellesley Stakes. 11 ster*i-g. TlV'l UWV !
