A GALLANT ACT.

Corporal James Swan, D.C.M., whoso parents reside in North-East Valley, was responsible for a plucky act; on the morning of August 8. Sc nt out to locate an enemy trench on the Gallipoli Peninsula ho came upon it unexpectedly, just over a slight rise, and found a Turk on the lookout, and on the point of filing at him. Corporal iSwan and tho Turk fired toe-ether, and the latter

dropped. The corporal, who was 40 yards ahead of the company, called on the men to charge, which they did. Ho himself pounced on two Germans who were trying to manipulate a machine gun, and in a low minutes tire trench was captured, with only three or four casualties, it was fortunate for the attackers that something had gone wrong with the gun. If the Germans had succeeded in righting it the havoc in the ranks of the charging company would have been disastrous, and the trench could have been taken only alter considerable loss di life. As the officers were all shot in the operations that took place about that time, it is impossible lor any recommendation to go forward in Corporal Swan’s favour. Corporal Swan is at present in Egypt, suffering from an injury to his arm. He expects to be sent to England ,and to return to the firing lino in a few weeks. RED CROSS CONFERENCE. In the telegram published last week from his Excellency Lord Liverpool in re a conference for Red Cross purposes, the date of the conference should bo Wednesday, November 10, not the 20th.
