LEAVING FOR CAMP.

another draft departs Some 2&0 men from Dunedin. Invercargill, and Milton, forming the second drait lor the Ninth Reinforcements and the two now battalions, left Dunedin on the lath lor Trentham. The city turned out in good style as usual, to bid farewell to the troops and flags flow at the mastheads ol most oi cue i important business premises. Shortly after 10 a.m. the men from Dunedin, 122 strong, mustered m the Garrison Hall, where the roll was called, the crowd in the galleries cheering each man as no answered his name. Aho men were briefly addressed by Colonel J. Cowie Nieholls, V D (officer commanding Otago district;, Colonel E. R. Smith, V.D. (officer commanding Otago Infantry Bng'de) and Mrs Beaumont, all of whom expressed admiration of their patriotism in volunteering, and wished them a safe and speedy return The men from Invercargill and Milton arrived at Dunedin by the first express, and marched to the hall, being heartily cheered an route. At the hall tffiy joined the Dunedin contingent, and shortly after 11 o clock a long* column swung along High street, and by way of Princes and Stuart streets, went to the Railway Station They were of a very good stamp, physically sturdy, and looking of superior intelligence, taking tnom all round. , ~ After the singing of God Save the Lieutenant-colonel Chaplain CuvzonSiggcrs addressed the men. His Worship the Mayor spoke a lew words to the departing soldiers. _ . , The Lion. Mr Allen (Minister of Defence) on coming forward was cordially welcomed. Addressing the soldiers, he said they were about to go into training to make themselves efficient for the work they had to do. It was not easy work, but it led to eolf-respect, to honour, and to glory, even if it led to death. The Empire was 11 P against a big thing, and the men before him were evidence of a great principle the principle that the men of this country were willing, voluntarily, to come to the country’s aid in the country’s need Applause.) “I hope we shall never need to nave conscription,” added Mr Allen, and, if men come forward like you, we shall never need to have it.”—(Applause.) He firmly believed that in the firing line the men would do their duty, and every man and woman in New Zealand would bo proud cf them. In addressing a few words to the neople, Mr Allen said there wore men in the community who could not take up arms, and it was their duty to keep things going at homo in the interests of those who went* away. He asked employers to keep open for the men who were going away the positions they had relinquished to enable them to serve the country’s cause.—(Applause.) If there were any persons in the gathering who knew men who ought to enlist, and who had not enlisted, it w■ ! s their duty to see that, in this time of trial, those men did enlist. 1 The Empire would never become groat if this was lost to it. God knory we did not seek it, but it had come to us, and we had to face it, and face it like the men and women that the race was made of. —(Applause.) On the call of the Mayor, cheers were given for the soldiers and for the men at the front, and the contingent then marched on to the platform and boarded the special train, which left at 11.53 a.m. THE MEN WHO WENT.
