Francis Paton Philjp, a very old resident of the Lakes District, died suddenly a{ Queenstown on the 20th inst. An inquest was held on the following- day before Mr L. Hotop (deputy-coroner), and the evidence disclosed that deceased had been drinking heavily for three days prior to hia death. Dr Stewart stated that in his opinion death was due to pneumonia supervening on a diseased heart and on a constitution weakened by acute alcoholism. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. Deceased, who had resided in the district for about 40 years, was a quiet and inoffensive man.
