Since the closing down of the Mataura Freezing Works and consequent cessation of rabbit-trapping, the rabbit during the recent dry weather has been increasing rapidly in the Mataura and Tuturau districts (says the Ensign). When trapping ceased lately one farmer at Tuturau thought tho farm was clear of the pesfc. Wishing to be certain of haring a clean farm, ho laid poison one night, and two days afterwards picked up 1250 dead rabbits. Another adjoining farmer picked up 280 rabbits as tho result of poisoning. Jackdaws have been known to enter open bedroom windows and carry off ladies’ jewellery, thus causing innocent people to be suspected of theft.
