THE LATE MR CAWTHRON.
NELSON, October 12. By the will of the late Mr Thomas Cawthron the bulk of his estate is devised for the prosecution of a groat project, which the testator evidently had in view for many years. After making provision for a number of annuities and legacies to relatives. Mr Cawthron has bequeathed all his real and personal property to the Bishop of Nelson, the Mayor of Nelson, the chairman of the Waimea County Council, members of the House of Representatives and Legislative Council for the City of Nelson and Waimea electorate, the chairman of the Nelson Harbour Board, and Mr William Rout the younger, of Nelson, all in trust, and who are all also to be executors of the purchase of land and the erection and maintenance of an industrial and technical school, institute, and museum, to be called the Cawthron Institute. It is understood that the testator contemplated an institution on somewhat similar lines to the scientific and research institutes in Europe, and covering a wide range of activity 'bearing upon industry and commerce. The value of the estate, is not yet accurately known, but it is believed to be in the neighbourhood of £250.000. The will was executed in Loudon in 1902.
