There is only a very limited quantity offering by growers, but merchants are still apparently trying to sell to reduce their stocks. At the same time they arc firmer in their demands than they wore a fortnight ago. Buyers, however, appear to bo operating only from hand to mouth. in sympathy with oats, chaff is somewhat firmer, but there is a fair quantity offering from the country, and merchants’ ideas of value at present are about £5 on trucks. The potato market is firm, and very few potatoes are offering. The Sydney market is now at £l4 per ton, and it looks as if the local market is going to he much higher as supplies are fairly scarce. There is also at present an inquiry from Melbourne. There is very little doing in ryegrass in a wholesale way, but there is a good retail trade, and a*lot of seed is going out. There is very little doing in wheat, and, indeed, there does not appear to be much milling wheat about. There is some fowl wheat, for which growers are prepared to accept considerably less prices than formerly. GRAIN AND PRODUCE SALES. Messrs Donald Reid and Co. report:—Wo held our weekly sale of grain and produce

on Monday, when values ruled as under: Oats: There is little change to report, except that the demand is not quite so keen and values, if anything, a shade easier. Shippers are in the market at quotations, chiefly for best qualities. Medium lines move off slowly for local use. Prime milling, 3s Id to 3s 2d; good to best feed, 3s to 3a Id; medium, 2s 9d to 2s lldper bushel (sacks extra). Wheat: Millers who have been buying only choice lots for mixing are more disposed to extend their operations to other lines in prime condition, and on this account more business has been done. Prices, however show no improvement. Fowl wheat ia offering plentifully, and meets with fair demand. Prime milling velvet, 4s 9d to ss; velvet ear, etc., 4s 5d to 4s 8d; best whole fowl wheat, 4s to 4s 3d; medium. 3s 6*l to 3s lOd; inferior, 3s to 3s 4d per bushel (sacks extra). Potatoes; Supplies are now in very small compass. Most of the stocks in local stores have been re-picked, and very few are now unsold. Prime table Up-tq-Datcs, freshly picked, have made an advance, and are now saleable at £8 to £8 10s; medium to good, £7 to £7 15s; inferior, according to quality, £4 to £6 per ton (sacks included). Chaff: Consignments have been coming forward more freely, and prices, which wore inclined to advance, have steadied. Prime quality alone is readily saleable, other sorts being difficult to deal with. Best oaten sheaf, £6 5s to £6 10s; medium to good, £5 10s to £6; light and discoloured, £4 10s to £5 ss; straw chaff. £2 to £3 per ton (sacks extra). Messrs Dalgety and Co. report as follows:—Oats: The market still lacks animation. Merchants and shippers are operating only for actual requirements, which have not been extensive. Feed linos are meeting with a moderate demand for local consumption. Prime milling. 3s Id to 3s 2d; feed lines. 3s to 3s Id per bushel, sacks extra. Wheat: A very limited business is passing in milling linos, and sales can be effected only at lower values. Fowl wheat is offering freely, buyers anticipating lower prices, are buying only to fill requirements in hand. Best whole fowl wheat, 4s to 4s 3d per bushel (sacks extra). Potatoes; Owing to the improvement in Australian values, combined with light arrivals, there has been a sharp advance during the past week, and all good lines have been taken at increased rates. Consignments in store requiring picking have received more attention in consequence of the lighter arrivals. Choice, freshly-picked lots, £8 to £8 10s; others, £7 to £7 10s per ton (sacks in) Chaff: Consignments of late have been coming forward more freely. As there is not any quantity of good quality chaff in store, all fresh arrivays have mot with a ready clearance at quotations. Medium quality lines in store have also been receiving more attention from buyers. Best oaten sheaf. £6 5s to £6 10s: medium to good. £5 10s to £6; damaged and inferior, £3 to £4 per ton (sacks extra). MELBOURNE HIDE SALES. MELBOURNE, October 14.
