TRADE IN THE PACIFIC.
CONTROL OF GERMAN FIRM. RECEIVER APPOINTED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, October 14, Some reference to the administration at Samoa, was made by Mr Alien when questioned on the subject by a reporter to-day: “ Whatever may bo said by the outside public about Colonel Logan, said Mr Alien, “I am persuaded that he is watching very carefully what is going on in Samoa, especially regarding German trade in the Pacific. Of course, he does not control Tonga. Wo are sending down by the next maif steamer a receiver to take charge of tho Deutsche Handels Und Plantaget Gesellschait, tho big German trading concern, which has its headquarters in Samoa. The officer wo have appointed is Mr A. Mathe--5011, who has had business experience with Messrs Dalgcty and Co., and who has also had experience as a consular agent in the Pacific. Ho had enlisted for active service, but wo took him out of the force and detailed him for this special duty. Colonel Logan has already taken charge of the company. Every step that can bo taken to preserve British interests is being taken, and tho enemy will not ho allowed to carry on trade in the Pacific if wo can prevent it.”
