SUSPECTED INCENDIAT<ISM, ASHBURTON. October L What looks suspiciously like attempted) incendiarism occurred a day or two ago* when at midnight a barrel of oily rags was found burning in Mr John Newman’s livery stables' carriage shed, while alongside the barrel a heap of canvas wheel-covers, over which a quantity of petrol had been poured, was also discovered. After the five had been quenched a search of the shed revealed several opened tins of petrol in various places and other evidence of a deliberate attempt to set fire to not the carriage shod alone, but the congested block of shops and business premises which it is at the roar of The discovery was made just in time to prevent a serious outbreak. The police are investigating the- matter.
