AUSTRALIAN COLLIERIES

SYDNEY, October 11. A conference between the northern col* liery proprietors and the Australasian Colliery Employees’ Federation arrived at a compromise by which the “ cease work” notices which should have operated on Saturday were withdrawn. Work was continued to-day. Nothing has been officially disclosed, but it is understood that though the miners’ demands for a 20 per cent, increase for the underground employees and a 25 per cent, increase for the top hands were not wholly conceded, the foundation was laid for an amicable arrangement. Meantime the terms agreed to will be submitted to the district lodges for ratification. Negotiations are proceeding in other colliery districts, and when finality has been reached the w r hole of the agreements will be submitted to the Arbitration Court.
