LAKE COUNTY

August 14.—For the past week splendid weather lias been experienced. The roads are drying up fast, and farmers nave started their spring ploughing. The Arrow Hosp.tal.—At last Thursday’s meeting of the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board the Executive Committee reported having received a request from Arrowtown residents asking the board to receive a deputation at its September meeting for the purpose of showing reasons why the Arrow District Hospital should not be closed. The committee recommended that Arrow residents be advised that the board regrets being unable to reopen the question of retaining the hospital at Arrowtown, the decision to maintain one hospital for the Lake County having been arrived at after careful and mature conskleration, and with the approval of the Hospitals Department. In these circumstances the board would be sorry to put the Arrowtown residents to needless expense in connection with any further action in the matter. The report was adopted. The Inspector-general of Hospitals forwarded to the board consent to the closing of the Arrow Hospital, a step with which the department was in complete agreement. Personal.—Mr James Ritchie, Macetown, has been accepted for service with the Eighth Reinforcements.—Dr L. H. M’Bride, son of Mr F. M’Bride, Frankton, arrived in Queenstown last week from London.—At the last meeting of the Queenstown Borough' Council Mr C. E. Gudgeon, town clerk and treasurer, informed members that ho purposed tendering his. resignation at next meeting. He is taking this step on the advice of his medical advisor. Mr Gudgeon intends to settle in Wanganui.—At the meeting of the .Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on Thursday, Dr E. W. Srnyth of Ngapara, was, subject to the Minister’s approval, appointed to the position of medical officer for the Lake County Hospital at Frankton. Three applications wore received.—-Prior to his departure for the front. Trooper Hugh Hunter, of tf>e Sixth Reinforcements, was tendered a farewell by the residents of Malaghans, and presented with a silver wristlet watch. Auction Sale.—Mr T. J. Cotter sold by auction this afternoon the balance ot the timber of the old Lower Shotover bridae. There was a good! attendance of buyers, and the whole of the timber was cleared at satisfactory prices. Marriage.—The marriage took place at Te Kuiti on July 24 of Miss Annette Clementina Turton, youngest daughter of Mr Wesley Turton, Queenstown, to Mr William Lewis Dcvonish-Msares, youngest son of the late Mr Joseph Leyeister Devenish-Meares, D.L., and of Mrs Devon-ish-Meares, Mearcscourt. Mullingar, Ireland. Marine Excursion.—The excursion arranged by the members of the Lake Wakatipu Steamer Service in aid of the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund, which took place on Thursday, was a great success. The Earns Jaw left Queenstown at 4.30, there being over 300 on board, besides which a large number of tickets were sold. Various forms of amusements were provided, the mock court being a good source of revenue. Sales of produce, etc., were also conducted on board. Glenorchy was reached at about 9 n.m.. stoppages having boon made at the d fforent calling pl'ces on .the lake. A couple of hours’ stay was made at Glenorchy, where a concert was given, after which the re...turn trip to Queenstown was made.
