PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

MEETING OF THE SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Society tor the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held on the 9th inst. Air G. Fenwick (president) in the chair. Airs M. E. Stewart wrote suggesting that as the committee was in the pcs.tion of having ample funds at its disposal a donation of £SO be made to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for the purpose of caring for _ wounded horses at the front.—On the motion of Mr Theomin, seconded by Air Snowball, it was decided that the suggestion bo adopted. Colonel Realms, Colonel of the Veterinary Service and Remount Section of the New Zealand Alilitary Forces, replying to a letter from the society regarding the care of horses on active service at the seat of war, said that the matter of oaring for these horses and doing what was possible to minimise their sufferings rested with the authorities on the spot. There were, however, with the Expeditionary Forces a staff of very capable veterinary officers, some of the best men available in the dominion Having been selected tor this duty. Colonel Realms said these officers had a full appreciation of the necessity of doing everying possible for the horses under their charge, and he felt confident the animals would not undergo any avoidable suffering. Regarding the matter of bandaging horses on board ship, the department made a point of supplying bandages for this purpose with each shipment. There was no doubt that the use of bandages was of great value, but excellent results had been obtained from massaging the. legs of horses when swelling made its appearance. With a majority of tranports a large number of men travelled with the horses, which rendered it possible to give individual attention to horses quiring it. That the horses sent from New Zealand had been well cared for on the vovage was evident from the fact that there had been only a small percentage of loss on the sea, and those landed were in good health and condition.
