Some of the Wellington shipping companies have arranged to dispense with the services of waterside workers of German, Austrian, or Turkish nationality, whether naturalised or not. A petition is being signed by members of the Wharf Labourers’ Union asking the Minister of Internal Affairs why the ordinary workers arc being dismissed while some foremen of the same nationality are being retained in their positions.
