SHOP LIFTER FINED. AUCKLAND, July 15. Another case of shoplifting in Karangahape road, with circumstances which pointed to a shrewd system, was detected yesterday afternoon. Shortly before two o’clock a wide-awake tradesman observed a woman, who was accompanied by a child of 13 years, and was wheeling a baby in a perambulator, stop at his shop window and handle goods put outside for display. He kept a wary eye on her, and saw her furtively slip a boot into the perambulator, whereon he went out and at the same time summoned a constable. The constable took the party to the Newton police station, where it was discovered that the baby covered, if not a multitude, at least a number of thefts. In addition to the infant and boot, the perambulator held hall a dozen pillowslips, a pair of boots, and a pinafore, all obviously new. When the woman appeared before the justices of the peace she was convicted and fined £3, with costs.
