A little more activity has been experienced in the stock market this week, a few sales of sheep by private treaty being reported. A great deal more business might, however, be done if the stock was available for sale, for there is a good demand for sheep, and particularly breeding ewes. The yarding of sheep at the weekly sale was not large, and the average of quality was below r the standard. For both fat and forward wethers graziers from outside operated freely, and secured the greater portion of the offerings. Fat wethers brought from 21s 8d to 255, while ,a pen of extra prime wethers brought 29s 6d. Fat owes ran from 14s 6d to 18s 6d, and fat lambs were a little easier owing to the closing of the freezing works, the prices realised ranging from 16s 4d up to 20s 6d, the top figure being for extra prime quality. Store wethers sold at ,19s lid, hoggets at 15s, and lambs (mixed sexes) at 10s lid. A lino of 200 full and falling-mouthed ewes realised 16s 7d. A line of 400 two, four, six, and eight-tooth ewes was passed in at 23s Bd. Private sales of sheep had included two and four-tooth ewes at 27s 6d, full-mouthed ewes at 22s 6d, broken-mouthed at 14s 6d, and store lambs (mixed sexes) at 16s 6d. There is a good inquiry for forward, bullocks and young cattle, Canterbury buyers being in the market. A fair number have been sold during the week to go north. The sales comprised: .Forward bullocks „t from £7 2s 6d to £7 12s ‘ 6d, two-year-old steers at from £5 2s 6d to £5 10s, 18 months and two-year-old steers and heifers in' a mixed line at £3 ss, and mixed sexes of yearlings at from £2 10s to £3. There was a fair yarding of dairy cow's at the weekly sale, and the best sorts realised from- £9 5s to £ll, medium from £7 10s to £3 7s 6d, while others ranged down to £5 ss. Heifers sold at from £6 10s to £7 ss. SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, July 18. Business continues good for all classes of stock, especially store sheep. There was only one public auction sale during the week, at Wallacotown, on Tuesday, when the yarding of all classes was fairly good, except for fat cattle, of which the entry ■Anas meagre, and consisted principally of unfinished heifer and cow beef. In view of the small yarding of fat cattle there, was a good demand, and prices firmed considerably, reaching as high, a level as has been seen in those yards for many months. In fact, in some cases heifer beef, and even cow beef, may bo said to have reached close on £2 per head above the average price, giving 35s to 36s per 1001 b. Although one cannot expect such prices as these to rule all through, yet, from present appearances, and the quantity of stock going

north, our butchers will have to continue tfi give pretty solid prices when operating in the market. The yarding of fat sheep was fairly good, and although prices were fairly satisfactory to vendors yet, the market was hardly so firm us at the sale a fortnight previous. There is still a strongdemand for store sheep, and prices have gone high for all classes; in fact, they are 2s to 3s a head above those ruling in Canterbury. There can be no doubt that the open winter and the abundance of turnip feed has had a great effect on the market, and graziers buying now to carry through till alter shearing will have to get abnormally high prices in January and February to come out at a profit. The keen demand from the north for sheep lias subsided somewhat, as prices hero are higher than those ruling in the north. One or two buyers, however, are still looking for owes of special quedity. A number of graziers and farmcis who are not prepared to tackle sheep at current rates have turned to store cattle, and these, also, are firming in pirce. The demand is keener and the prices higher for all classes of stock; and especially for store sheep, than has been the case for a, very long time. Prices may be quoted:—-Fat cattle: Ox beef, 34s to 355; prime heifer, 32s 6d to 33s 6d; medium. 29s to 50s; cow, 28s to 295. ' ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH, July 15. Entries of stock generally were somewhat smaller than last week, fat sheep and. fat cattle being exceptions. CHRISTCHURCH, July 2. There is no demand for wheat at the present time, the largo millers being well stocked up, and importations of Australian flour prevents any speculation in grain, even though it is doubtful if last season’s crop will be nearly sufficient for requirements. There is little improvement in the position as regards oats. Those who have made shipments to the United Kingdom do not expect more than to come out square. A further shipment is to be made by the Otaki to West of England ports. Some business ia being done in oats by Southland with the Melbourne market. The potato market is even weaker than it was last week. Buyers arc holding off completely, and until a demand again sots in from Auckland no improvement is expected. Growers arc holding out for £2 10s, at country stations, but even at £2 it would be difficult to find buyers for any quantity. Little business has been done in seeds for spring sowing, but the season for this business has barely opened yet. GORE STOCK SALK (Pe* United Paces Association.) GORE, July 21. At the Gore sale to-day about 1200 sheep were yarded, consisting mostly of breeding owes and store lambs. Wethers brought from 20s 6d to 245, and one fetched 375, a record for Gore.
