PALMERSTON NOTES.

(From Ouu Own PALMERSTON. July 14. The Territorial ball which was held at Goodwood last week was a success in everything but the costumes, very few ladies and but three men attending in fancy dress. The mask and fancy drees ball under the auspices of tho Palmerston Tennis Club, which is to be held shortly, is creating a lot of interest. From -all accounts a large number will be present in costume and mask. The report that the train service is to bo altered, and in consequence that a nuinber of the railway staff will be shifted to some more favoured place, has caused great anxiety in the town. Palmerston certainly cannot afford to lose any of its none too numerous citizens. It C to be hoped that the rumour has been exaggerated. July 20. The fancy-dress and mask ball, given by tho local tennis club, was the most successful function of its kind seen i,n Palmerston for many years. About 50 or 60 of tho dancers were dressed in fancy costumes. Tho dresses were much better than the usual kind seen at dances of this sort, and reflected a great deal of credit, in many cases, on tho ingenuity of tho wearers. Another decisive defeat awaited the Palmerston Second Football team at tho hands of the Wiaikouaiti Juniors on Wednesday last. The local men were outclassed in all respects by their opponents. The weather has been most unsettled for the last few weeks. Although there has not been excessive rain at any one time, yet there have been few days without some showers. The snow has not come very far down tho hills, but towards tho Rock and Pillar there seems to be a very deep covering of snow. The nowly-formcd Athletic Club was formally opened last week. A 600 match between sides picked by the president and vice-president resulted in a win for tho latter team. An exhibition of ball-punch-

lnp was givcji by Mr Hay, and was watched with much interest. During tha evening speeches were made by the president (Dr Harrison) and others, and several songs wero sung by members of the club. Although there has not yet been any formal handing over of the new dub room to the railway stafil, the room has been used for the last two weeks, and is much appreciated by the railway men It is reported that the heavy snow up Kyoburn way has made the road to Naseby almost impassible for traffic. On Saturday last a few enthusiasts turned cut to give the Senior Football team some practice. The full team did not turn up, which is a pity when if is considered that to win the- banner the next three matches with Waikouaiti must bo won by the local men, It looks as if the non-plavers took more* interest in the game than the players themselves.
