THE GENERAL ELECTION

Mr E. Short will probably bb the Opposition candidate for Rangitikei. A meeting of delegates of the Bruce Liberal Association will be held in Milton on Saturday, July 18, to select a candidate to contest Bruce in the Liberal interest. It is understood delegates will bo present from Tokomairiro, Lawrence, Waitahuna, Kaitangata, Stirling, Waiholg, and Waronui, and that there will be three candidates put up for selection. Some time ago (says the Waikato Argus) it was considered likely that Mr A. Schol-es, chairman of the Wiaitomo County Council, would bo a candidate at the coming general election for the Taurnarunui seat. In view of the claims of Mr W. T. Jennings to stand in the Opposition interest, however, Mr Soholes withdrew in favour of tho exmember. It is now stated that Mr Soholes has been approached with a view to inducing him to stand in the Opposition interest for the Raglan electorate. Though Dr M'Nab is tho chosen Liberal candidate for the Hawke’s Bay seat, he will not deliver a campaigning address during the time his political opponent, Mr H, M. Campbell, is engrossed in Parliamentary duties (says the Wairoa Guardian). As there was some doubt as to whether Mr H. F. Toogood would after all be a candidate for the Christchurch North scat on account of his having been offered the position of engineer to the Patea Harbour Board, Mr D. Jones states (say the Press) that he has received information from Mr Toogood that he will adhere to his decision to stand for the seat, and will decline the appointment that has been offered him at Patea. Mr Gnnson, chairman of tho Auckland Harbour Board (telegraphs our correspondent), replying to a deputation from tho Bible-ln-Stato-Sohools League, declined for

personal reasons nomination as a candidate for Parliament for Auckland East at the next general election in the interest of the league. Mr Gordon Harper has, we learn by an Association telegram from Christchurch, been selected as the Government candidate for the Ricoarton seat.
