TAPANUI SHOW

The Tapanui poultry and produce show Was hold on Saturday under very favourable weather conditions during the day, but in the evening ram came, and no doubt affected the attendance. The door takings, however, showed an improvement on last year “s against £ls 10s —and the society has every reason to be gratified at the resuit. ihc Agricultural Department's exhibit occupied most of the Town Hall space, and the poultry exhibits were staged in the Central Hall. The Government display was on much the same lines as last year, and comprised a great quantity of the exhibits included m the exhibitions made at the Dunedin and Invercargill winter shows. In grain and roots there was a special local interest, as most of this produce w T as from' district experimental plots. Roots from other paids ‘ compared well with those locally grown, but in grain the wheat from Mr Peter oirns Crookston farm had a strong lead in the matter of yield. The “ reclamation of sand areas” exhibit was of special interest, and a feature added to the collection this year was wool in the different stages of manufacture. There were inntfincrublo side lines, and the Whole exhibit was of great educational value, and well worth the trouble of its preparation. Fields Instructor M'Oulloch was in charge, and he was assisted by Inspectors Dalgleish (Tapanui), M'Giilvray (Owaka), and Munro (Balclutha). The exhibit was attractively arranged, and the officers in charge were most courteous in imparting information in connection with the various tests conducted by the department. In the winter produce section the exhibits were not so numerous as might have been expected. Gi'ain and seeds - evoked poor competition, and in roots swede turnips were the only strong class, and the quality generally was very fine. Vegetables made a fair display, and Mr Tracey King’s exhibits from Riverton won all along the line. ■ Mr D. Martin (Beaumont) had a very fine exhibit of apples, well grown, and splendid in colouring. In this section Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. (Kelso) had an attractive exhibit of photographs showing the results of fertilisers sold by them on turnip crops in the district. Mr Leash (Kelso) showed vegetables treated with potash, and Mr A. J. Stivcn had a good exhibit of hams and bacon. * The poultry entries in the Central Hall were slightly in advance of last year. There 'Wits no competition in g<- re, although Mr W. R. Quin showed some good birds. A cockerel was the pick of the Minorcas. - In Andalusians there were some good ones. The only cock bird forward was shown by Mr George Hunter (Wyndlham), and was of good type, nicely laced, but could be a little denser in top colour and stronger in comb. The first and second pullets were good ones, strong in type and colour. The judge found fault with the attention devoted to headgear

by fanciers in this claes. In brown Leghorns the pi'k was a cockerel, on the small side, but right in type and colour, and showing good breeding. There were nice silver Wyandotte hens shown by Mr 'iracey King, the- winner of the special being good in black and white, but rather heavy in lacing. White Wyandottes were the feature of. the show. . The three placed cock birds wore, all worthy of special mention, and the winner gained pride of place in the matter of type and feather. The hens were the strongest class in the show, and the winner speciallv pleased the judge, being good m type and colour, and very strong in expression. This bird (the property of Mr A. Rogers, Kaitangata) gained the award for best bird in the show. Cockerels were uniformly strong, the winner being good in type, quality, and colour, and was well shown. In pullets W. Robertson’s exhibit won "on type. There -was poor competition in the minor classes, and turkeys and ducks were neglected. Pigeons were small in number, but the quality pleased the judge. Mr W. A. Walker was the principal exhibitor. Pets made a good display, guinea pigs being specially favoured. Mr Geo. Double, of Invercargill, judged the poultry section, and gave local fanciers considerable information in regard to the various breeds. -Mr Burrows (Gore) judged the field and garden produce, and Mr Jas. M‘Kenzie (Kelso) the grain and seeds, and all gave every satisfaction. The show was capably managed, and the energetic president (Mr W. R. Quin) was well supported by his working committee; whilst the secretary’s duties were carefully carried put by Mr A. Munyard, who has been associated with the show for many years. The local brass band provided a capital open-air musical programme, and good business was done in a guessing competition, for which the prize* were a fat sheep (presented by Mr K. MKenzie), a goose, and two fowls. Appended is*the prize-list:— POULTRY SECTION.
