SCENIC RESERVES.
(Fuom Uuk Uvvn Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, July 13. The annual report on scenery preservation shows that 3000 acres were reserved during last year. This brings the total area of scenic reserves in the dominion to over 214,000 acres, which are split up in 363 reserves. The report remarks upon the fact that this area comprises mostly hilly land which is unsuitable for settlement except in large areas at low rentals. The areas acquired included some in the Waimarino district, where a few sections in blocks of Crown land subdivided for settlement were reserved for scenic purposes. A small area fronting the Kawhia Harbour was set apart, also a charming piece of forest land in the Nuhaka district, near Wairoa. whilst 84 acres of bush land close to the Gisborne-Otoko railway were also permanently set apart. The gross expenditure during the year was £113,000.
