WAIKOUAITI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.! WAIKOUAITI, December 5. A meeting of the St. John’s Social Committee was held on Monday for the purpose of making arrangements in connection with a garden party, which it is proposed to hold at Mr A. S. Orbell’s homestead, the object being to augment the funds of the local Anglican Church. Tho mooting was well attended, and elaborate arrangements were made for tho entertainment of the public. Tho programme will include a number of dances by a party of Maoris, games of all descriptions, and other attractive items. 'The local Brass Band has promised to attend, ami will give musical selections during the afternoon. Tho special prizes offered in various competitions at the forthcoming Waikouaiti show are at present on view at Messrs D. Malloch and Co.’s business promises, ami are much admired. They include three handsome silver cups, a silver teapot, and a gold medal. In addition to these, a large number of special cash prizes arc offered', and altogether the programme has been well arranged, and should attract large entries. Tho nominations received by the Waikouaiti Racing Club for the meeting on New Year’s Day have been somewhat disappointing. there being a reduction of 50 on last year’s total. For the principal event only three nominations wore received, but there are good fields in both trots, and some interesting racing should he witnessed. The club is getting the racing track in good order, and is also effecting a number of improvements, which should add to tho comfort and convenience of the public. Tho weather has been cold and showery for some weeks, and farmers are wondering if there is to be any summer. Grass is very plentiful everywhere, and if warmer weather should set in, tho present season should bo a good one. Shearing is proceeding slowly owing to the broken weather, and it will be some time before it is completed. Over 2000 gallons of milk are being received daily at the local dairy factory, and tho output of cheese during tho present season is likely to bo well up to the average of recent years. The company has been put to some Ices and inconvenience owing to the present labour troubles, having been compelled to rail two consignments of cheese to tho Bluff for shipment instead of to Dunedin, the extra freight amounting to £2O.
