THE PANAMA CANAL.

NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT. ' (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, December 4. For months past speculation has been rife in shipping circles as to what action, if any, the Shaw Savill and Albion Company and the Now Zealand Shipping Company would take in regard to the new trades which will come into existence through the opening of the Panama Canal. Several statements have been published in this connection with regard to other big steamship lines, but un to the present the intentions of two of the largest lines trading between the British Isles and New Zealand have not been made known. From inquiries made yesterday, however, your representative was informed on reliable authority that, provided a reasonable amount of support is forthcoming, it is the intention of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company and the New Zealand Shipping Company to establish a regular steamer service between New Zealand ports and the cast coast porta of North America when tho Panama Canal is opened for traffic.
