Tho Highdcn stable, which has been out of luck for some time, had three winning representatives at Fcilding. r lhe fixture named is one of tho most popular in this island, but struck bad weather on boLi days. Otherwise tho “tote” turnover wouid have jumped considerably more than it did. It w: s expected that Pariform, runnerup in t.ie Wellesley Stakes. would bo the Highden representative in the Sftakcs, but G. Price sent Ermenngarde, who was never headed. Mr Lowry’s two-year-old, Brocade, was favourite, but finished in the ruck! Expect, runner-up to Peronilla Inst spring, finished in third place. Roiunania was tho only two-year-old produced in the Oroua Stakes, the new weight-for-ago race, on the second day. Ventura was favourite, but she was beaten by Postillion (by Advance —Brown Spec), one of the best sprinters in the Dominion. He 'S trained by F. Tilley, and is half-brother to Ballarat, for whom G. Price won a lot of races when trained by W. Davies. Postillion is owned by a steward of tho V anganui Jockey Club, who adopts the noni <fb course of Ross Allen. Postillion conceded Ventura s!b. In tho Railway at Ellerslie the latter is asked to concede the Advance colt 10!b. He will only have to put up 31b penalty for tho Fcilding win. The third win was scored by Garanoe, by Vasco—Madder, in the Scurry on the second day. On tho first day four horses were better backed than Garanoe for tho Trial, in which he finished unplaced. He was favourite on the second day, when be beat t\vo of the place-getters in the Trial. Ho is one of the first progeny of Vasco, and is half-brother to All Red. Strange to sav, the first six progeny of Stepniak and Madder were good performers, ending with All Rod. Since then the five results of the same mating have hardly been heard of as performers. The writer has previously expressed the opinion that it was a pty Sir Laddo was allowed to leave New Zealand. On the first day two of his progeny finished first and second in the St. Andrew’s Handicap. They were Lady Laddo (by Possibility) and Master Laddo, a half-brother to Frisco. The latter is leased to T. Lloyd, the Marton trainer, who did well on the other side, with tho jumpers Marton and Glcnmorc. Fred Tilley won races for two of his patrons. On the first day he scored in the Trial with Ardent, by Royal FusilierSanguine (dam of Sanguinary), for the Wanganui sport who adopts the racing name of Wire Tokcna. Mr Billy Duncan was recently elected a steward of the Wanganui Jockey Club, and has sot the older members a good example by donating a gold cup for tho next Wanganui Cup. On the second dav the Forded trainer led in the Martian filly Sunbird, a winner at Trentham and Rincarton, and who must bo nearly out. of the hack class. She only beat the Achilles colt, Iliad’s Hero. Both wore unplaced- in the race won by Bertrada on the first day. Postillion, previously mentioned, made Tilley’s third win. Followers of the stable were disappointed with Leonta. sent out favourite for the big race on the first day. Fair Rosamond was send out favourite for the Manchester Handicap on the second day. but failed to got placed. The Wan-ganui-trained Ota.hu, by Nestor—Vapour, scored from the Gisborne-owned Birkline, a placegetter on the first day. In a field of 15 only one horse was less fancied than Lord Renown, and he ran accordingly. The hurdle races proved interesting contests, although there were no first-class performers engaged. Flingot has improved greatly in hifl jumping, and ho put down Tho Rover and Darby Paul, among others, over two miles on tho first day. This gallop was supposed to improve The Rover, and he was sent out favourite on the second day. the distance being two furlongs shorter. Two of the 9.0 division and supposed back numbers in Aberbrothock and Te Whotu provided an interesting finish. Backers were all astray in the hack event, on the opening dav. Jackman, bv Handsome Jack, formerly in Atwood’s stable, scored from Rexer, a half-brother to Fashion Plate, who carries the same colours ns Brown Trout. Tins pair met more than their match in the Pan Fran mare R : 1I op the second day. Phe was a useful performer on the flat, and should win during the holiday meetings at Manawatu and Marton.
