Speaking at a scholastic function on Thursday (.says the Post), the Hon. Jas. Allan, Minister of Education. said that teachers should bo given facilities to pay visits from one district to another within the dominion itself, and an opportunity for more extended visits. Opportunities should bo afforded teachers who would benefit by the experiment to visit other countries and sec what was being done there. “ I hope,” rej marked the Minister in regretting the exigencies of finance, “to be able to do seme, thing in this connection some day.” An interesting observation upon the validity of Native marriages was made by his Honor Mr Justice Chapman in a judgment delivered at the Supreme Court on Tuesday (says the Now Zealand Times)- Tjio case before his Honor concerned the land of a Native woman, who was married according to Maori custom to the plaintiff. There was no pretence, said his Honor, for suggesting that marriages not in accordance with the Jaw of New Zealand had any validity. If the Native Land Court recognised the right of issue of customary unions, including those which were polygamous, a recognition which might well bo necessary in the interests of justice, the Supreme Court did not interfere, but that circumstance did hot give to such marriages oven the colour of validity.
