WELLINGTON NOTES.
(Fkou Ode Own CoBEESPOxnKnt. ) August 30. F. D. Jones leaves for Sydney to-day on a holiday trip. It is eight years since he was at Randwick, when he rode Maniapoto to victory in tho Metropolitan. Mr Frank Neylon, whose body was found in the Wanganui River this week, was a well-known figure in racing circles between Wellington and Now Plymouth. For many years he was in partnership with Mr George Spriggcns ns totalisator proprietors. Prior to that he was with the old firm of Hill and Poole, which firm was the first to work at the old Hutt course.
Tartar Julian came up from south this week, and wont through to Hastings to school a couple of tho Hon. J. D. Ormond’s horses engaged at the Marten meeting. F. Davis came through from Hastings to superintend the shippmg of Soltano for Sydncv to-day Mr Lowry is not taking any risks with tho colt. He has had a specially-built box after the stylo the borers are brought out from England in. It will also bo used for the return journey. Fred Davis informed your correspondent that the colt was not as forward as ho would have liked, and he will probably race at least twice before the A.J.C. Derby comes up for decision.
11. H ickcy, tho Hastings trainer, also left for Sydney to-day with Whakaweira, Beacon, and Sir Daniel. Beacon is the most likely of the lot to score a win. Sir Daniel is a half-brother to Pjnk ’Un. and a Now Zealand Cun candidate. Ho showed fair form in hack welters last season. The New Zealand Cup candidate Yankee Doodle was among the winners at the Wanganui Hunt Club meeting.
It is reported that T Lloyd will leave for Sydney next week with Glenmore and Marten to compete at the A.J.C. spring meeting. W. Adams will go across to ride them in their engagements.
(Simple Simon, a successful steeph chaser in Australia a couple of seasons back, is engaged at Dannevirke, also Gold Crest, who is to make bis reappearance at Marion next week. There was an inquiry from Sydney this week for the half-brother by Coronet to Malcara and St, Toney In A. Shearsby’s stable at Awapuni. Mr llarle dors not want to dispose of the youngster at present.
Tho JVellington Racing Club’s committee moots on Monday next, when the programme of the soring meeting will come up for adoption. It is stated that tho va'ue of the Champion Plato will ho increased to lOOOsovs.
Tlie Maniapoto gelding Manakau, recently returned from Sydney, lias gone into T. Wilson’s stable at Awapuni. A. E. Neal’s lease bad expired. G. Pritchard lias recently received some additions to bis team at Trentbam They include throe-year-olds by Ghoorka, Achilles, and Conqueror.
