SOUTH AFRICA
CAPETOWN, August 21
Addressing a meeting in Johannesburg, Mr Hertzog fiercely attacked the Prime Minister (Sir Botha) for allying himself with cosmopolitan financiers and Imperialists to the detriment of South African interests. He also denounced the Government’s action in relation to the strike. August 24.
Ever since Mr Hertzog was excluded from the Cabinet his quarrel with the Prime Minister (Mr Botha) has increased, and now threatens a crisis.
Mr Hertzog’s bid for Labour support was followed by a demand to appear at Mr Botha’s meeting at Rustenburg on the 26th and speak after the Prime Minister. Mr Botha declined to permit this, on the ground that it would present a most undignified sepectacle. Speaking at Johannesburg on Friday, Mr Hertzog reasserted that Imperialism •was only good for South Africa when it did not conflict with African interests.
Mr Hull, speaking at the same place, * declared that the King’s toast was threadbare, and would no longer be drunk when the toast of South Africa was drunk.
