NATIVE LAND DEALING.
(Fbou Ouh Own CoRRKsroxPENT.) WELLINGTON, August 13. Mr Craigio asked the Minister of Native Affairs (the Hon. W. H. Homes) to-day (1) Whether he would cause inquiries to bo made into reports that syndicates and speculators were acquiring large areas of Native land by dummying and aggregating such areas into the hands of a few by means of transfers and assignments; (2) whether ho would in any measure dealing with the Native land laws this session make provision for the prevention of dummying and aggregation in the future. Mr Herries rep’iod that the department was not aware that the position was as stated, but if any cases were brought to its notice the necessary inquiries would be made. Every available precaution had already been taken in regard to the matter mentioned in the second question, but it would receive further consideration when the proposed legis’ation was being drafted.
