DUNEDIN D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motto: ‘ Union is Strength.” The above elub held its usual we ekly meeting in Dot’s room. Lower High street, on August 19, at 8 p.m. These present were Francis (president'. Girlie (vice-presi-dent), Oriel (secretary), Poeeum (C.M.R.), Indian Chief (patron), Dulcie, Ivanhoe, Silverda.le, Hobs, Nik Karter, Billy Burlow, Malvena, Bimbo VII, and one visitor. The President submitted the balance shoot for the late annual social, which was held in June, and a discussion took place thereon. The subject for the evening was the debate “ Which Wields the Greater PowerHeredity or Environment?” Silverdalo ’od for Heredity (the affirmative side), supported by Bill} - Burlow, Pat, Dewdrop, and Francis. Possum led for Environment (tho negative side), supported by Bimbo VII, Duncan Gray, Indian Chief, and Last Rosa of Summer. As the leaders of both sides agreed to waive the right of reply, a voto was taken, with tho result that Environment won by seven votes to two. Tho President then moved a vote of thanks to Last Rose of Summer, Duncan Gray, Pat, and Dewdrop. Possum proposed, and Oriel seconded, that Duncan Gray become a member of tho club. Indian Chief and Francis spoke in favour of the motion, which, on being put, was carried unanimously. An informal die-, cuesion next took place amongst the mem-' bers. August 26th will die “ Open Meeting,” and tho subject for September 2 will be a flebate, “Is Marriage a Failure?” Franck leads for the affirmative side, supported by Dulcie.
