One of the Liberal** who takes up an independent attitude and doer* not attend the party’s caucuses was inclined to be facetious when spoken to on the subject last evening (says our Wellington correspondent). “It may be similar to the case of a worthy divine,” ho said, “ who is requested to take the position of a bishop, or of a demure young maiden when ;ho receives a proposal of marriage. They both want to be pressed. This may be the position in regard to the Liberal leadership.” Tlie Prime Minister (the Mon. W. F. Massey) anticipates (our Wellington correspondent states) that the session will close about the middle of November. The Otago Acclimatisation Society offer a reward of £5 to any person giving information that will lead to a conviction against any individual for trapping, shooting, poisoning, or by other means taking opossums or dealing in their skins. An Orepuki J.P. has resigned. He states* that the duties of oflice had been responsible for making more enemies than friende.
