HOW MILTON, OTAGO, FARED DURING THE RECENT FLOOD: SCENES IN AND ABOUT THE DISTRICT.
The first photo shows No. 3 pipe line, which was placed on an embankment some 25ft high, and the earth laid on top of it. The flood-waters, coming down from what is termed the governor dam, augmented by' other streams, washed this embankment away, and left some 100 ft of the 3ft pipe hanging in midair at a distance of about 14ft to 18ft from the bottom. The water in the pipe has a pressure of 3001 bto the square inch. No. 2 photo shows one of the many slips that occurred. A huge tree may be observed lying on the right-hand side of the house, and had that come away with the slip serious damage would have resulted to Mr ' Blackwood’s house, and also, possibly to the inmates.
