FLOODS ON THE TAIERI.

RAILWAY TRAFFIC DISORGANISED. Though the heavy rain which had been falling almost incessantly for 24 hours previously ceased on Monday morning its effects are being severely felt and it would seem that even more inconvenience has boon occasioned than was the case with the heavy downpour nearly a fortnight ago. Fortunato’y very little damage has been caused in the city by the ram. The Leith looked dangerous on Sunday evening, but with the cessation of the rain it dropped rapidly, and all cause for anxiety was removed.

A lot of low-lying sections out on the Flat, and more particularly in the direction of St. Kilda and Tainui, have boon flooded, and several small slips are reported as having occurred in the city, but in no case has any serious damage occurred. A number of small slips occurred at various points around Port Chalmers, the worst one being a rather largo subsidence at the rear of the Garrison Hall. The largo building was apparently in some danger of being damaged through the weight of material that encroached almost to its foundations.

During the heavy gale that prevailed on Sunday night a yacht belonging to Mr F. W. Platts broke adrift from her moorings at Carey’s Bay, and was wrecked on the rocks at Harrington Point. M ith that, exception the small craft in the harbour sustained no damage- so far as we can learn. The following particulars of the rainfall in various parts of the city since Sunday morning are of interest: —Opoho, 2.23'n; Gardens, 2.55 in; Kow, 1.9 n; Pumping Station (Musselburgh), 1.12 in up to 9 o clock on Monday morning, and ,200 in up to midnight.
