A FALSE DISCHARGE.
\v.i.ª .august n. Captain Wahistrom, the master of the steamer Putiki, was charged at the Magistrate's Court >hat he gave Thomas Thackeray, the cook on the steamer, a certificate of discharge which ho filled in to the effect that the seaman’s conduct was very good, knowing the same to he false. This charge is said to ho the first of the kind in the dominion. The cook left the vessel without leave. The defendants made out that Tbos. Thackeray’s discharge giving his conduct as very good was in accordance with instructions from the Marine Department. Mr Walker, Collector of Customs, prosecuted. The defence was that Thackeray’s conduct since joining the ship was good, and he did not feel justified in giving him a bad discharge.
